Blog Response #7

Upon completion of reading your novel, share in your blog what you have learned about a different culture or a different historical period of time.  What seems strange or different to you?  What couldn't you believe?  What did you discover?  Take time to give specific examples from your novel that share what you learned about history and/or a different culture.  Share your feelings about what you learned.

  1. What I learned is that war is inevitable. No matter how poor or rich you are war will always effect you. Culturally it is mostly the same. A few differences are the foods they eat and how undeveloped the whole country is. There really isn't anything strange to me that seems completely out of sorts. My big thing is how is there so many guns. Like, how is there like thousands of guns and how did they get there? I think that the culture of Sierra Leone is a beautiful one even through war and terror.

    1. I feel like most countries are similar to that. As if they have all the corrupt characteristics of war, yet they still have the beautiful landscapes throughout the country.

    2. This book is definetly an eye opener for us. I just cant believe how many people were affected by the war. There was no safe spot for people to stay. Like you said even the rich in the city were taken out by the war. Just the way Ishmael described some of the landscape, it must be a beautiful place to live in without war.

    3. So would the sound of gunshots grow on you? Or would it be such a disturbing sound that whenever you hear it you would think of war? i agree with you on a sierra Leone having a beautiful culture even though it is broken.

    4. I think that once you go through what Ishmael went through, no gunshot would be a nice sound to you. I think it would always trigger bad memories.

    5. Did your book every talk about how the people with money and power were effected by war because i feel that they couldve been just as effected by the war or they could be making money off the war.

  2. The biggest thing that stood out to me in Kite Runner was the fact that the men had multiple wives. It seems strange because here in America we are accustomed to having only one spouse. This was first mentioned when Babe and Amir were going to a soccer game. I laughed because it was mentioned casually, like it wasn't a big deal.

    1. The cultures in these foreign countries are extremely different than ours. In A Long Way gone, these young kids were brainwashed to shoot, stab, and kill people. It was normal to see young boys walking around with ak47s and g3s. These books are an eye opening for all of us.

    2. that is a very eerie thing to think about JOE! would you ever have more than one wife? Or are you accustomed to having one wife and following the traditions?

    3. In A Thousand Splendid Suns the author portrays again the theme of having the men have multiple wives, wondering since these two books have this theme if any of his others have it as well.

    4. Kenny in response to your question I feel as if there is one person out there for everyone. if you think corruptly enough to even consider the fact that you could have more than one wife, I feel sorry for you. I'm waiting for my one soulmate.

  3. In Night; I discovered how people lived. Torture happened mostly in the Jews' lives. Why would anyone treat anyone else like this? I just don't understand?! Even though we lived like this for a while. This kind of lively hood shouldn't be continuing. It should be forbidden. It should be illegal! Many things horrified me throughout the novel. Like when they threw the babies up in the air and shot them, that made me break down in tears after I read that. They barely ate any food at all. They ate bread and snow.

    1. It is truly a terrible thing when stuff like this happens. Even today in the news you hear about the horrific things that are happening everywhere. I also agree that it needs to be stopped.

    2. In the book A Thousand Splendid Suns there was a lot of abuse, verbal and physical. Women were treated terrible in this book and made me grateful for what we have.

    3. It was a horrific time in history and no one could even believe that something like this would even occur. I also feel that more should've been done to stop this cruelty faster.

    4. It is an important part of world history that we need to learn from to protect ourselves from ever committing such atrocities again.

    5. I feel that this book has lessons that we should learn from and because all this happened so long ago in the past we should learn from this and never go back to such cruel ways.

  4. I have learned that war might be one of the worst things a young kid can experience. What seems strange to me, is how to the rebels keep growing and are able to capture kids to use in war. The main thing that shocked me was that these young boys are brainwashed to kill the rebels. They are put through some traumatic events that would drive even an adult crazy. I discovered that people are ruthless in a time of war. The ptsd that comes along with war is just unbelievable. This book was definitely an eye opener for me.

    2. I think the craziest thing is at the end of the book when the rebel forces combine with the army to overthrow the government. It is crazy because it sounds like a movie that is fake, but this is real life.

  5. What seems so strange to me about this culture or land, is that war seems to be a regular day thing for these people. Living in a war - torn area would be a strange. hearing gun shots everyday would at first be very frightening, but they grow use to it because they know its not gonna stop. I personally could not live in such conditions, but then again i would probably adapt and overcome the gunshots and mayhem that would be happening in the environment around me. just like when Ishmael heard gunshots when he moved in with Tommy, He wasn't afraid because he was so use to the sound.

  6. In the book Kite Runner there are clear differences between the cultures of our two countries. I cant believe the things that happened in Afghanistan during their time of war. The Taliban would kill people at random for the smallest things. The also have servants and slaves that are forced to work. I learned there are many things that happen in Afghanistan everyday that never happen in the United States and I am thankful for that.

    2. Yeah were are fortunate here in the USA, in Afghanistan Hazaras like Hassan were low class citizens and almost always were servants to the high class Pashtuns. but when Hassan's son came to America no one there even knew what a Hazara was and Sohrab was able to live a more normal life.

    3. In American history, we had similar things to what you described. There was slavery, and massacring of Native Americans. It's just that we realized that these things were wrong way before them.

  7. What I learned in A Thousand Splendid Suns, is that men have a lot of power back in this historical time period. It was easily recognizable to notice it in this book. What I couldn't believe in this book, is all the times the main two girl characters were abused. There were times they would have gotten beaten with a belt, forced to eat literal rocks, and lastly locked up for trying to escape their terrible home. Over all, this book can easily teach someone about the culture in this historical time period and what life was like living in it.

    1. I agree completely this book opened my eyes so much. When Laila and Mariam got beat for running away, well actually beat and then locked up, I got sick to my stomach. Also how they could not travel with out a man, that would be so weird if we had to have a man everywhere we went.

    3. In Night people were abused continuously within the concentration camps. I also agree that men had a lot of power throughout history. Hitler's main goal was to take over the whole world once he got a little taste of power.

  8. In the book A Thousand Splendid Suns; I was surprised by many things. The culture is completely different from ours I believe. The way the men completely control the women is disturbing. In our culture you marry whoever you want but in Afghanistan women are pretty much forced to marry a man and not to mention men that are like thirty years older. When Rasheed beat Mariam and Laila for things such as talking back to him or talking to another man, made me sick when I was reading it. They could not even travel anywhere without a man. This book overall opened my eyes about how good we actually have it here in America.

    2. I agree Afghanistan culture is weird compared to ours how men control everything while women cant do anything I don't think I could ever live in a culture like that how would you deal with it if you had to live in a culture like that? for me I wouldn't no what to do if I couldn't sing, paint wear jewelry or get an education.

  9. While I was reading A Thousand Splendid Suns I learned that in the culture of Afghanistan I was weird how some people believed that some people are posses by demands, how women aren't aloud to work or have an education and how they have the most ridiculous laws they have to follow, but the worst thing they have to deal with in their culture is having to go through how many wars, dealing with the Taliban, then having to go through another war because of certain people did in America and the have to pay the price of it which would suck if you were innocent and getting hurt or killed in the cross fire. what seem strange to me that when one of the characters went into a seizure people thought they were posses by a demand, how some of the laws you cant sing, dance, paint and other stuff. I discover how everything lead up to 9/11, how the Taliban took over, the wars that took place. after reading the book my feeling for it were sad, because when Laila had to take Aziza to the orphanage, when Jalil wrote the letter to Maraim but never got it so Lalia read it, how Lalia saw her parents killed by the rockets which also killed her friend but I was also happy when Tariq came back have orphanage rebuilt Kabul is better.

  10. I learned that we are very lucky to live here in America. Culture in Sierra Leone is the typical visualized African country. Many villages with many cultured lifestyles. They are not as technically advanced as we are used to in the United States. Ishmael did not even know what an escalator or elevators were. I discovered that we are lucky to live in a country where we can be protected by our own government, although it has its own flaws. In A Long Way Gone, Ishmael must fight for his life, watch as his family leaves him, and control his own mind in the midst of a war-torn country that he becomes a young soldier in. Ishmael shows what it means to be a human when you reach rock bottom. This book makes me realize how lucky we have it here, and that things could always be worse.

  11. WELL. The culture in Thousand splendid suns is very crude and different. The men are complete jerks to the ladies. Its nothing to what we have now these days. the culture is very poor and not the greatest shape to live in, unlike us we have wealth now and very clean place to be living. I just couldn't believe how Rasheed treated the girls in this novel. He would beat them and threaten to even kill them. That's the biggest thing that got me in this book.I learned that you should be happy with what you got big or little.

The culture depicted in A long way gone was not extremely different from ours here, there was a few small differences such as how undeveloped the cities/ villages were and how poor many of the people are. But other than that they really didn't explain how their culture differs from ours. I did find a lot of the book strange though, mostly the civil war aspect. Civil wars make no sense to me, like i know people are trying to fight for something they believe in but why slaughter so many people in your own country, it just sounds really dumb and I dont like it:(

  13. In Night the most shocking thing that occurred was that the concentration camps did not effect the public at all. They did nothing about it and carried on with their daily lives. When the "black smoke" was constantly falling down they didn't think twice that millions of people were being killed. They didn't even react to the smell of burning flesh. War affected everyone no matter if they were rich or poor, but Jews were Hitler's main target. They were tortured and treated like animals in the concentration camps.

throughout my book The Kite Runner I learned about the relationship between the Hazaras and the Pashtuns in Afghanistan, how the Pashtuns were the high class and the Hazaras were servants. Amir, a Pashtun has a hard time seeing his friend and half brother as a friend because he is a Hazara servant. It was also interesting how Baba and Amir went to being high class citizens in Afghanistan to going to the bottom of the ladder when they came to America this was really interesting to see how Amir changed his perspective on a lot of things while in America. It also surprised me how when Amir returned to Kabul the city was almost unrecognizable to him because of the war, this made me realize how much destruction war could cause and how it changed to whole feel of a place. This book really taught me a lot about the culture in Afghanistan and how the country was before it was overrun by fighting.

  15. The culture in Sierra the book A Long Way Gone is extremely different from the one in the United States. Before the civil war everyone trusted everyone and let people in their houses, but when the civil war broke out most of that trust was lost with all people in groups. Another cultural difference is how Sierra Leones' music was different from the United States.

  16. I did not learn much more than what I already knew from reading my story, Night. I was already decently informed about the Holocaust and much of World War 2's history. What I did learn was that the Jewish people in the camps held onto their beliefs a lot more than I expected. Although when I think about it makes sense, they did not have much else to hold onto. The main thing I noticed that I also did not expect was that gas chambers seemed to be a lot less of a concern than what I thought. Throughout the entire novel when showers are talked they are actual showers.

  17. after reading A Thousand Splendid Suns, I can't say I learned very much about afghan culture, since I already knew a substantial amount about it. I did, however, learn a great deal about it's history, of which I knew very little. For instance, I had no idea that there was a soviet invasion. It also taught me that the cause of their infighting and civil war was their inability to reform a government that everyone liked and agreed with after the collapse of the soviet union.

  18. In A Thousand Splendid Suns; there were a lot of things that I found unusual. I have heard of the situations that they were going through in history class before. So it was not so much that it was happening but the book made it a little more realistic than when I learned about it in history class. In the book; women were treated like they were nothing. They were unable to travel alone, and men treated them like objects. They were supposed to stay home and take care of the mens needs.

  19. I also found it weird how a father would just give his daughter away with little to no questions asked. I could never imagine being forced into marrying someone that is that much older than me.

  20. In a thousand splendid suns it amazed me how different their everyday life is compared to ours. They have to deal with gunshot, explosions, murders, and very strict rules. On the other side of it we don't hear explosions and murder doesn't happen much so our everyday life is way different. Another thing that they do is the men usually have more wife which is really unheard of in the US. I learned a lot about Afghanistan culture while reading this book.

  21. The culture in the book, The Kite Runner, is very different from what we experience around here. One of the first things that popped out to me is that in the muslim culture, incest is encouraged. That just seems very strange because that is illegal in the U.S. I guess we kind of take freedom for granted. Their whole city was destroyed with the war. To be honest i did not believe this whole book because what those people were going through did not seem real but it was. I discover what the people had to be feeling from this book because it made you feel like you were right there watching it all happen. 27. In the book Night, the story line never seized to amaze me. I always was learning something new about that time period and especially about the Holocaust. I learned that many people were fooled by Hitler, and one thing I cant seem to wrap my head around is how one man could have so much power? If the German soldiers knew that Hitler would do such a thing, why not try to stop it? Why just sit there and let the Jews die left and right? Things that seem strange to me is how the Jews had no clue this was going to happen. They were forced out of their homes and had to give up all their valuables, but yet they still followed Hitler. How could you just give up your whole life to one man? I can't believe the Jews believed Hitler. Now I know at this time they didn't have a choice, but still why listen? Throughout this whole book I've learned that if something seems to good to be true, it most likely is. The Jews were fooled and they knew it as soon as they arrived at the concentration camps. When they said in the book, "there is no god" that's when they knew for sure that Hitler wasn't everything he was said to be. This book was for sure a good read and I do recommend it to people who want to learn more about the Holocaust.

  30. In the book I am Malala, the biggest cultural difference is the fact that they look at women as a less important than men because the only role they see women capable of doing is cooking cleaning and birthing children. This is a huge difference from out culture because treats everyone as equal, whether its their skin tone or their gender everyone in america is equal. The part that shocked me the most was when Malala's cousin told her father that he needs to make her cover her face and should run around like a boy. The fact that the young boys are already raised this way is sickening. I think they need to do what Malala's father is doing and treat the women as equals because if no one starts doing it the culture will never accept that they are equals.

I felt it was odd how kid were going out fighting at 12 years old, i knew it happened but having to live with that at a young age would be horrible. I learned that going to war at a young age can really change you as a person at a young age and completely ruin your whole child hood.

  32. To be completely honest, I thought most people in Africa lived in huts. When you hear talk of Africa on the news, its always about how villages are struggling to find water or whatever, and I was always under the impression that people who lived there were very primal. About 5 pages in to "A Long Way Gone" we find out that is not the case, especially when the kids talk about getting down to rap.

    1. i thought the same way at first because for only 15 cents a day you could feed a child. You never really hear about life over there or how theyre keeping up with the rest of the world.

    2. Before I read this book I never even heard of a child solider. The news doesn't seem to talk about Africa very much.

  33. I learned how great it is to live in America. Amir first starts out in the middle east, and then lives in America. When Amir goes back to the middle east to visit with some friends, he realizes how much he dislikes the middle east. I realized it is a honor to live in a country were we are truly free.

  34. In the novel Night, Elie Wiesel is a young Jewish boy that relives his moments of surviving in the holocaust. I learned that the Germans basically took away the religion and simple human rights from the Jews. I don't believe that Elie and the able Jewish men had to run 20 kilometers non stop through windy freezing temperatures with no food . If they would stop the SS would shoot them on the spot. How he and his fellow Jew survivors made it through is definitely exaggerated. I learned that horrifying events like this that people had to overcome stays with you forever. Elie lived the rest of his life recalling the events of the holocaust to people because he wants it to never be forgotten. We shouldn't forget what happened to these people so it never happens anywhere again.

  35. I read the book 1000 splendid suns and there were a few things that seemed different to me. I would say the first thing that stood out is how men can have multiple wives. Another thing that stuck out was how men have total power over woman and how abusive they are towards them.

  36. In the book I am Malala it showed the diverse culture and beliefs. Malala grew up in a time where the males had more freedom than the women. The women were seen to stay home and take care of the family where the males went out and got and education and went to work. The people in this time were also required to wear certain clothes when going out in public. Women were looked down on when they went out in public because it was thought that only males should being going out in public.

    1. Was there an other part that stood out to you about the culture? I thought that it was different that they have to wear that scarf around their face. Also it was different that she had to be moved to many hospitals, here we only go to maybe one or two.

    2. a thing that stood out to me was how when women wanted to go out they had to be accompanied by a male family member and had to cover up. Here its like if you want to go out you can go by yourself or with friends if your a women and here we dress how every we want when we want.

  37. In the book I am Malala the culture difference is that women cant do anything that the men can do. All the things women are able to do is stay at home and cook and clean. Its just different to me that women cant even go to school. I believe everyone should be able to go to school, its just a shock to me that in their culture they cant. Also its different that people yelled at Malala for not wearing that thing to cover up her face. I also feel like Malala did the right thing by sticking up for what she believed in and not letting anyone take away her education.

    1. Women were overlooked at this time with they could and couldn't do and schooling was totally different too because the men were also seen to have the education.

    2. I agree that Malala did the right thing and spoke out. It's horrible that she got shot for it though. Even now she is still speaking out about how education is important.

  38. In the novel A Long Way Gone i learned a lot. I relaized how good of a life us kids have now a days. In the novel Ishmael is taken from him and he is forced to be a solider. He starts killing people and abusing drugs. This is no way for a kid to grow up. It really corrupted Ishmael. I found it strange that this was happening in other countries and I didn't even know about it. We really our lucky to have the life we have today compared to how these kids in the book were raised. They start doing "Brown Brown" which is a mixture of cocaine and gun powder. That is not normal for a kid. They also do fun games like slitting prisoners throats. These are all things i found terrible and really make me realize how lucky i am to have a normal life.

  39. I learned from A Long Way Gone that war can change a country in an instant. They went from getting along and having incredible amounts of trust in each other to hiding from anyone they saw and feared for their lives like when they see a group of boys and immediately think they’re here to kill them. I also thought it was strange how the boys in the book were so fascinated by American music and how the music saved their lives more than once. This book showed me how how other countries can rely on everyone and how war can change the lives of people forever.

  40. I have learned that no matter where you are war will find you and war effects everyone. They respect there elders more but the rebels don't. What is strange is how different things are on so many levels. The rebels have tried to take the cities before but know the have more children and men to fight.

  41. I read the book a long way gone, and in the book there a few things that I have learned about the culture in the book. Mostly the main thing I learned is how where he lives in Africa it is very remote but there are a bunch of small villages. One thing that i couldn't believe is that when they where doing drugs they would mix gunpowder and cocaine and they called it brown brown. I discovered how little power the government had during the civil war.

  42. I learned from A Long Way Gone that war destroys people and their trust for one another real fast ishmael grew up in a village that trusted everyone and throughout the war they were thought to be bad people and everyone was scared of the group of boys.

    1. That is very true. When war happens people don't know who to trust so they stop trusting.

  43. It's amazing to me that Ishmael is just a 10-12 year old kid making his way through Sierra Leone, all by himself, getting into military conflict and drugs. The world that he lived in is massively different from the world that we live in. He was doing drugs, executing prisoners of war, and even leading his own squad of child fighters but the age of around 13. It's amazing to see how one nation can view things so differently from our nation. There is no way that kids would even get close to a battlefield in the United States.

  44. I think it was a little weird how Amir wanted to go to Afghanistan and Pakistan when there could be a war. I discovered that a child froze to death because there was not enough beds or blankets for all the kids at the orphanage. Amir also has flash backs of what him and Hassen did before he pasted away.

  45. In A Long Way Gone a big cultural difference I noticed was in the beginning when he talked about how is grandmother waved goodbye. His grandmother had to switch what hand she had her cane in so she could wave with her right hand. In their culture waving with your right hand is a sign of goodluck. This came to me as a surprise because in our culture it doesn't matter what hand you use.

  47. In A long Way Gone" Ishmael shows use some interesting things. In the book the cultural examples are moving a cane from right to left hand and waving is a sign of good luck. Another is his grandpa being an elder and he tell Ishmael about the natural cure to poisonous fruits. Also in the book he shines a new view in how undeveloped countries have modern weapons but still live in huts and have to walk to school from miles away. I find it funny cause most of us that go to wd come from surrounding schools. The biggest thing was how undeveloped their army was to use kids to fight and how it ruined their lives.

  50. Reading The Kite Runner, you really see Afghan culture in a completely different way. In the beginning you hear about nice houses, and being well off driving an American car. If I would have thought about Afghanistan before reading this, I never would have thought about people who are well off enough to build their own house and decorate it however they please, to be able to pay for a servant to live with them.

  51. In A Long Way Gone I was surprised how far the lack of trust went. Rebels and the army used young boys as soldiers and as a result when the boys entered some villages they were treated as if they were a threat.

  52. In I Am Malala the most shocking thing is how the dad treats women in his family compared to others. He pushes Malala to learn and to dress the way she wants to. He says that he will protect her freedom so she can fallow her dreams. Other family members disagree with the dad. Like when Malala's brothers are born her grandpa tries to shower them with gifts, but her dad steps in and says no because he did not give gifts to Malala. I love that her dad cares so much and will do some much for his daughter, will other fathers in their culture don't.

  53. In the book, Night, it takes place during the 1940's/Holocaust. Compared to Iowa/how we live today, its completely different. The way the Jewish people were treated, you would never see that today. I couldn't believe that they were not feed, treated, everything was bad about the Holocaust. I discover that very few survived, in this book I believe only 12 did. Overall very sad book, but very good read at the same time. I recommend this book to anybody who wants to read a good book.
