Blog Response #5

In all five novels the main character or characters face adversity in one way or another.  Describe how you view the character's challenges in your book, and talk about how your character handles the hardships and struggles.  If you were in your character's shoes, how would you handle yourself?  What would you do?

  1. In a long way gone, Ishmael has dealt with some extreme challenges. He has to deal with the struggle of running from the rebels. He also has the burden of losing all of his family and has to see dead bodies all the time. Everytime he gets into a predicament he just runs, and he doesnt think about the consequences. He just completely shuts out all the pain of dehydration and starvation. I would honestly probably react similar to what he has done. I would do some of the survival stuff a little bit different. The one thing i dont understand is why doesnt he get a gun from somewhere or him and his buddies should attack a rebel. This would make his chance of survival greater if he had some type of weapon.

    1. The gun would be very heavy and how would he be able to lug the sucker all over the country and have it not be beaten up and jammed?

    2. I do agree that Ishmael is very strong for his age. He is using every aspect he can to survive. One thing I was questioning during the reading was, why Ishmael, Junior and the other boys kept going back to the town, even when they knew the rebels were there.

  2. In my book nana, Mariams mother hung herself because she was depressed, and now Mariam is thinking it was because of her because she want over to Herat. She doesn't do much to handle this problem other than sit around and feel sorry for herself. I'm not sure what i would do if i was in her position, BUT i would make the best of it. Life throws curve balls at you, just depends on how you wanna hit it :).

    1. Wow that sounds like it sucks for Mariam. Anyway your sayin if Kristina BRUNSON Beard offed herself.. youd try to make the best of it? How would you go about doing that?

    2. I would have felt bad if I was Miriam because Nana told her how her dad was and Miriam still liked Jalil more and didn't listen to Nana. If you were Miriam would you stick by your dad or mom more? I would like Nana more because she was always around and Jalil only came around occasionally.

  3. Well, Ishmael is in a war torn country, split down the middle. He goes through villages not knowing if he will be alive leaving the village. He is emotionally drained and can't even cry. If it was me I'd of gone and given up way before he does. But in all honesty I'd probably go and try to kill a rebel, take his gun, and shoot the rest of the rebels. It'd probably fail but oh well.

    2. Might as well die trying! I don't blame you there, because out of everything that happen, i would be at the mi d set of, i'm gonna die anyways

    3. I agree with you 100%. I think that he should attack a rebel and take his weapon. There is honestly no point of running still, like just get some weapons to defend yourself. If he is going to die, he might as well go down trying.

  4. In A Long Way Gone, Ishmael Beah travels around his country is search of safety from the war. During this time, he faces a lot of adversity attempting to survive. Death glances towards Ishmeal via starvation, rebel soldiers, and defensive villagers. As a young boy viewed as a soldier, he handles himself fairly well for the situations his is put in. He is constantly fighting against his own mind and trying to stay positive and use his knowledge to keep himself safe. If I were in his shoes, I think mentally I could stay as strong as him, but his knowledge of the forest and survival is incredible and I do not know how I would physically handle myself in the survival situations.

    1. He handles himself pretty well! A lot better than I would! his knowledge of the forest is very impressive for only being 12 years old.

    2. I agree Ishmael is mentally strong. You can definitely tell that he has some sort of ptsd. It is crazy that a young boy can just handle that and not be extremely crazy. I think his key to survival is his family and he keeps going to try and find them.

    3. i feel the same way about Ishmael of how he is mental and physically strong and can handle things very well with fighting for his life to try to stay alive and can handle a lot and has a great memory of the forest which would be a lot better than me.

  5. In A Long Way Gone the main character Ishmael and his brothers face adversity through this book, the rebels are out to basically kill everything and destroy every village. The rebels have a group and split up Ishmael and his brothers, right now it's himself and the forest and how he can survive. the way he handles everything about what has happened is difficult for him, sense he has a picture perfect memory its hard for him to not think about everything he has seen. If I was in his shoes i would try to adapt to the forest and live as long as possible, which he has. I would definitely try to stay head strong and get through the days.

    1. His memory is quite amazing, which is why I think he has some signs of PTSD now. On the other hand, I think his memory has kept him alive. He is able to remember a lot of things from he elders to aid his survival efforts.

    2. I feel like the whole story is a PTSD flashback since in the first chapter of the book he was in New York when his friends asked him to tell his story.

    3. I agree Nathan, I never really thought about it in that way. I always thought about it in a negative way rather than a positive. His memory has helped him survive.

    4. Well if so far some of the story that he has been telling is a complete lie then its going to be hard for me to believe that. Hopefully he is telling the truth Jared

  6. In my book, The Kite Runner, Amir is privileged in many ways but one of the challenges he face is the approval of his father, Amir handles this by taking advantage of his friend and servant Hassan. He feels very bad after he watches Hassan get raped for the prized kite but he did it to get the approval of his father. And Amir has trouble dealing with his guilt and tries to get rid of Hassan by making him look like a thief, but Baba forgives him and Ali says that he and Hassan are leaving. Amir knows it is all his fault that their servants left but says nothing about it. If I were in Amir's shoes I would have trouble knowing what to do, while i'm not sure if I would help Hassan when Assef attacked him, I do think that I would tell my father about it and apologize to Hassan for not helping him. If I would have seen Hassan admit to the theft that he didn't commit I think that I would have told the truth and maybe then Hassan and Ali wouldn't have left and Hassan and Amir's relationship might have been better.

  7. I read the book A Long Way Gone, Some of the ways that my character faces adversity, is that the narrator has to walk through the bush with little to no protection or food. He also has to avoid getting killed because there is a war going on his country. So I feel like that he has many challenges to overcome and it is hard to just stay alive. some of the ways that the narrator handles all of the troubles that he is going through is that he is he just runs away from a lot of the killing, or he does whatever he can or has to do to get food. If I was in my characters shoes I would find a good place to hide and stay and then find a way to defend the area.

  8. In my book, I am Malala, Malala the main character she faces a lot of challenges because in her country women do not have the same rights as men. For example in there country women can not show there face in public or wear white because it is consider a mans color. But Malala's father allows her to do this because he believes that women should have the same rights as men. And Malala likes this because she runs around like one of the boys. A lot of the men in her community talk to her father and say that he shouldn't allow her to do that but he says that if we want our country to be better we need to have equality. Even one of Malala's male cousins that is the same age as her. Which just goes to show how this cultures raises her young. I do not think I could do this because it is the way there culture has been for years and now she is stepping out so she will have a lot of people who r displeased with her actions and i do not think i could handle that much ridicule.

  9. In Along Way Gone the main character Ishmael, his challenges are very hard to deal with in my views. He literally almost dies every chapter but he keeps pushing on even when hes separated from everyone he knows he just keeps going. I honestly cannot imagine myself in this position at all, but if I was actually in his shoes I would probably just lay down and die.

  12. Mariam faces a lot of adversity from her family being a harami "a bastard child". It seems like Nana does not want her to experience the world outside of the kolba. I think Nana is like this because she doesn't want Mariam to be happy or have a good life because she didn't. Mariam has a new hardship to face now, the death of nana. Nana hung herself while Mariam was gone to Herat and Mariam is blamming the whole thing on her self. To handle it she just lays in bed and beats her self up over it all and would only really talk to mullah. I dont know how i would handle the situation.

  13. In a Thousand Splendid Suns, Mariam had an over protective mother. Mariam wanted to go to Herat to see her father Jalil, but Nana didn't want her to go. Mariam went anyways. When she got back Mariam found that Nana hung her self. So now Mariam thinks its her fault, because Nana didn't want her to go. 14. In my book a long way gone the main character Ishmal faces death multiple times but still escapes it. After escaping death Ishmal seems to cope with it by walking or some type of activity even though it doesn't really help. If I were Ishmal I would probably do the same thing that he has been doing because i would not know what else to do.

  15. In Along Way Gone, Ishmael lives in fear after the first encounter with the rebels. They move village to village and don't know who or what they'll find and eventually get separated from his friends. 2. Yeah I agree that it would be a good idea to intervene when Hassan was in trouble, but I can see why Amir did not help Hassan, he had the last kite and Amir believed that with this kite he could unlock a new relationship with his father and he was young and may have not understood the impact of this situation on his and Hassan's life. It is easy to look back on a situation and see what you were supposed to do but many times when you are in the moment it can become hard to not act impulsively and think long term.

  17. In A Long Way Gone, Ishmael has a lot of struggles that he has to deal with. Ishmael has to be on the run all of the time because of the rebels. Since he is always running, he lost his family and doesn't get to see them anymore. He always faces hunger as well. All of the villages that Ishmael passes through have already been robbed of the food. In every village, the adults are scared of Ishmael and his friends. They think the boys are a part of the rebel group. I think Ishmael is handling this well. He is a kid who is surviving on his own which is not easy. If I was him, I would continue to try and find a safe place to stay.

  18. In the kite runner, Amir, the main character, deals with family and friend issues. His father doesnt really think anything of him, in a way that he thinks Amir is kind of a pussy. Amir just wishes for approval from his father and when he wins the kite tournament he believes it is working. His friend issues come with Hassan, who is a Hazzar. AMir is a Pashtun and Pashtuns/Hazzars arent technically equal. Baba, Amirs father, has Hassan and his father Ali as servants on his esatate so Hassan and Amir cant really be friends. His father does not approve of the friendship, and subconsiously i dont think Amir wants to be his friend either.

  19. In Night the main character goes through adversity like the unimaginable. He handles his challenges like a champ. He gets sent to Auschwitz and does not complain at all. His only goal is to stay with his father and stay alive. He knows what his fate is and does his best to avoid it. If I was in his shoes I would want to be dead immediately. Even though he hasn't had a gut-wrenching experience for himself, just witnessing everything that is happening I would hate to go through that. Knowing that my chances of coming out alive would be very slim, I would rather end the pain early and not experience the hardships.

  20. In the book Thousand Splendid Suns Miriam deals with a lot of hardships and throughout the book her life gets worse and worse. Near the beginning of the book Miriam's mother kills herself right after her father shows her up. She is then forced to marry this random guy and live with him even though shes just 15. She later has 6 miscarriages and that ruins her marriage with Rasheed. Rasheed gets very bitter over the miscarriages and starts to abuse Miriam. Miriam has gone through a lot of hard time and I think that shes being as strong as she can and she's doing her best to keep going. I would be a wreck if I was in Miriam's shoes, she went through awful things and I don't think I could handle it. Especially if I was 15 years old.

  21. Mariam faces many different Challenges throughout the book. She first has to deal with her mother treating her like she is worthless, and then the death of her mother. After her mother died, she was basically abandoned by her father, and was gave away to a man she didn't even know for marriage. At first she was angry that her father was just letting her fathers wives get rid of her. She also had to dead with the hardship of having 7 miscarriages, she blamed herself for them and thought it was because she thought it was punishment for her mother. If I was in her situation I would not handle it very well; I could never imagine being married to someone that I don't even know shortly after my mother died.

    2. I agree with Brittnay that Maraim does a lot of challenges throughout the book and I wouldn't be able to deal with all of it and I think Jaili is two-faced and Nan is a bad influences on Maraim and who doesn't even care about her that much and doesn't want her to leave her I think Jaili and Nan are both two-face sell fished people who only care about them self.

  22. In the book A Thousand Splendid Suns the character Mariam goes through many hardships. At the beginning her mom commits suicide and she blames herself because she left. As the book went on she had to marry a 45 year old man, who she did not even know and did not want to marry. Her husband was rather rude to her and treated her like crap. She blames herself for all the things she has been through even though they are not here fault. If I was in her position I would be heartbroken, our culture is so different compared to Mariam's that I would not know what to do. I would refuse to marry a 45 year old when I am only 15 if I could.

  23. in the novel Thousand Splendid Suns one of the main character Mariam goes through so much challenges in the book with her mom calling her names, her dad not really loving her and make her go off and get married because he is a shamed of her. Her mom committing suicide because she left her house, Rasheed her husband being curl to her by making chew on pebbles because of all the miscarriages she had. even though she went through the this hardship Mariam just cries when her mom calls her a bastard, and when she was going through all of the other stuff she cried, scared, depressed because she really didn't know how to deal with everything. If I was in Mariam shoes and if my mom called me a bastard I would be angry and would start crying and saying some mean things back maybe. If my dad said he was a shamed of me and made me get married at an early age I would be ticked and make sure he would never see me again. In the beginning before he found himself in a concentration camp he faced the main challenges with optimism. When the police took there valuables and forced them into ghettos he meet those problems with hope that things will get better. Later he meets it all with indifference. Uncaring of what sort of beatings he took he just moved on. If I where the character I am I would probably handle the problems the same unless I retained the knowledge of what I have today.

  27. In the book A Thousand Splendid Suns, the main character Mariam faces many challenges. One major challenge she faces is gender equality. The way Mariam faces this hardship isn't very well. She just doesn't stand up for herself, where in most cases she definitely needs to do/say something to stand up for herself. . For example, when she was forced to marry at age 15, or when her new fiancé forced pebbles down her throat because her cooking wasn't good enough. If I were in Mariam's situation, I would definitely say something if I were getting treated this poorly.

  28. In a Thousand Splendid Suns Mariam faces adversity everyday of her life. In the beginning it shows that her parents don't get along well and she only gets to see her Dad once a week which would be hard, but that really wasn't a hardship. Over her life she wanted to go to Herat and leave her Nana but when she left her mom hung herself from a tree, and her was the cause of Nana's death. She some how didn't seem to effected and just moved on living her life, but I if my mom died I would be a mess for about a year. I would go out and do stuff, but it would take me awhile to get back to my normal self.

I think Ishmael does a very good job of keeping his composure and staying with what he needs to do, he knows that he needs to survive so he keeps moving to other places that are told to be safer. The way he deals with his hardships is to just keep moving, if I were in his shoes i would definitely not be able to keep running to different places not knowing what is happening to everyone else. Ishmael Beah is a very strong individual.

    1. I feel like him being able to move forward so quickly is part of the shock. I think it will affect him later on in life. Maybe this book was part of his coping process.

  32. In A Long Way Gone Ishmael faces a lot of adversity. At first it was just getting to Mattru Jong, but it kept evolving. They heard the village his parents are in was attacked by the rebels. Then the rebels attacked the village he was in and had to escape. Then he had to deal with being so hungry. I am not sure how I would handle being in the kind of situation. It is a very hard thing to imagine.

  33. In a Thousand splendid suns, Miriam basically has to deal with her mother telling her every day that she is worthless. At the exact moment Miriam actually grows to appreciate her mother, she comes home to find that she had hung herself, and struggles to get the idea that it was her fault out of her head. After that Miriam is sent to live with the rich father she used to love, but had recently begun to despise. About a week later, her remaining family arranged a marriage that she didn't want or have a say in, just so they could get rid of her. As you can guess her new husband eventually became unhappy and aggressive with her, culminating in him forcing rocks into her mouth and making her chew just to prove a point. I have no idea how I would have reacted or handled any of this, just because it is far more brutal and screwed up than anything I have ever had to deal with. All i know is that I would find it very hard to value myself as a human being after all the crap that was thrown at her.

  36. The character who is also the author and is around 15 years old in the story Night. He was separated from his mother and sister and is now only with his father. He had a few times where he got to make decisions. The life of the character is getting worse and worse. He is basically working until he can't anymore than he dies. There isn't a lot of options in his situation. I would probably try to work and prove that I am worthy keeping alive. I would try to keep my head up and look to the future.

  37. In the book I am Malala, she goes through a big struggle because she was born in a country where girls are to be hidden for example only boys can go to school, women and girls have to cover their face when outside and also no women can wear the color white because it is considered a guys color. Malala over comes this struggle because she has her dad on her side. He wants her to go to school and go out in public not hidden. Her dad gets judge by all the people around but he doesn't care because he wants Malala to be treated just fairly. If i was in her shoes i would handle it just like she is. We all wanna be free and be treated fairly so I will dress how i want to and not be hidden or told that I cant go to school.

  38. In "A Long Way Gone", our narrator faces the challenge of constantly outrunning the rebel forces, and fighting for his life. It is interesting to read about this, because he is only a young boy at the time, and he really doesn't know how to cope. He witnesses a lot of brutal deaths and sees a lot of things that young kids his age shouldn't see, and he just seems awful quiet about it all. I think he just doesn't know how to react, so he doesn't. I think if I were in his shoes, I would be in the same kind of shock.

  39. In the novel Night, the main character Elie deals with many hardships and challenges. The way he deals with them is better then I would especially when he arrives to Auschwitz. We all know what Auschwitz is, so if I was in his shoes I have no clue how I would deal with it. The way I see his challenges is completely not fair. He did nothing to deserve what Hitler and the Germans are doing to him, but yet he still handles it like a pro. He never once said that he couldn't do it, he just handled whatever life threw at him with his head held high. Through out all this struggle, I don't know how I would handle it because I am the type of person who needs to know what's going on and with all of this, I probably wouldn't make it.

    2. Is this book still a hard read for you? I feel like all these books have something similar because all the characters are going through something and they are all handling it like a pro. I also dont if i could handle any of the struggles these people go through in their daily life.

    3. I'd say he handled his challenge's well. He didn't show it to anyone in particular.

He tries to run from these problems and tries not face them. I would react in a similar way i think. Ive never been in this situation obviously so i couldn't exactly tell you what i would do.

He wrote her name on the family tree when it only held the male line. He lets her go to school and wear white when women can not because it is a mans color. Her dad gets judged a lot because of it, but he does not let that stop him from giving Malala have her freedom. I feel like I could because she stands up for what's right.

  44. The main character in part one of A Thousand Splendid Suns, Mariam, was born out of wetlock. Her mother was the maid of Jalil, mariam's father, and jalil's wives kicked mariam and her mother out, but jalil buil them a little house out in the woods. Her mother has a mental disability, and is constantly verbally abusing mariam. Jalil comes by every thursday, and one thursday, mariam asked if she could go to Jalil's house and go see a movie. He says yes, but never picks her up. Her mom said not to go or the "Jinn" might come to her and she could get hurt. Mariam left, but never got to see Jalil. His driver took her home only to find her mother hanging from a tree. Mariam went to Jalil's house and later was forced to marry a 45 year old. If I was in her shoes, I know I wouldn't survive. First off having everyone be ashamed of me and despising me because I was born out of wetlock. and I couldn't handle the abuse from her mother. I would die if I saw my mom had killed herself, and then ato soon marry a 45 year old!! I would never be able to survive. Mariam has faced many hardships. ~Cat

  46. In the Kite Runner Amir faces many challenges. He deals with his father and sun relationship not being as strong as Amir wants it to be. Amir also lives with guilt because his mother died giving birth to him, and he is blamed for her death. It would be very difficult dealing with not having a biological mother, and having people blame you for her death.

  47. In a Long way gone the main character faces the struggle of being in a civil war. He has to deal with seeing death, starvation, and fear. The main character has a photographic memory so he doesn't forget anything he sees. This makes everything harder on him. If I was in his situation I probably wouldn't be able to sleep at night being able to remember the faces of the people I've seen die. I would also try to keep my group I am hanging out with small. The less people you have the less chance you have of getting caught.

  50. In the book The Kite Runner, the narrator Amir, lives with the guilt of sitting by as his servant Hassan who stood up for him, gets raped by larger kids when he could have just walked away and given them Amir's prize kite. He then tries to ignore Hassan. Making both of them feel bad. Because of this, Amir tries not to judge people because of their pasts.

  51. In the book Kite Runner, most of the main character's challenges are internal. He's at war with himself to do something about Hassan getting raped. He didn't know if he should/could intervene. If i were in his shoes, i would like to think that i would intervene, especially for someone who was like my brother. Another one of Amir's challenges is his father's disapproval of him. Baba is disapointed in Amir because he's not like a real boy. He doesn't like soccer, he likes to read, and he blames Amir for killing his mother. I have a hard time trying to relate to this because i have a great father, but i still think i would tell my father if something like previously mentioned happened.

  53. In Night, Elie has a lot of things going on. I mean its the holocaust. No one wants to be a part of something like that. Elie deals with a lot by keeping himself together. He doesn't really show any emotion to anyone.
If I was in this situation, I'd want to die at any moment. I wouldn't want to live through the camps.

  54. The Night, the main character Eliezer is one in my eyes faces the most adversity. Being a Holocaust prisoner is not the easiest task, espically the fact that they starve. Eliezer handles the pressure well, and if I was in Eliiezer shoe, I don't know what I would do. Just a great character who thought it all faces the adversity well.

  55. In Kite Runner the characters go through many tough adversities throughout the book. The main character Amir is forced to leave Afghanistan and move to America for a better life. His mom died at birth and his father dies of cancer later in the story. There are also many of his friends that die in Afghanistan while he is in America. If i was in this situation i would make a new beginning in America and not even think about going back to Afghanistan where the Taliban is in control.

  57. Ishmael, from A Long Way Gone, is in a situation that is almost other worldly. Sierra Leonne is a country in anarchy, something that we don't see in any developed country. Kids like Ishmael just wander freely, dodging rebels, and even fighting with the military at one point to oppose them. I couldn't imagine being his age and having to pick up a rifle to start fighting for my life. It seems so crazy for the events in this book to have actually happened, so much though that I would have no idea how I would react to his situation, and honestly I'm not sure If I would be able to handle it.

  58. In the book Night many of the characters face many struggles just so they can stay alive. The characters are getting beaten, tortured, and abused. They handle it by just having faith because they know if they do not obey the soldiers they know they would get abused or even die. If I was in the characters shoes I would just listen to them and do what I was told but I feel like I would zone everything out.
