  1. I chose a long way gone as my number one because it seemed the most interesting to me. I wanted to know more about how other countries take kids to fight for them. It seemed like a really interesting story. The first chapter is slower like every other book, but then the 2nd and 3rd chapter start to pick up more about the story. I like this book so far.

    1. I completely agree. I think this book will be an eye-opener to many people who are not educated about what children around our age go through in other countries.

  2. Well, I really wanted Night. That book really attracted me in, but I ended up getting my second choice, A Long Way Gone. This novel attracted me because of the war-like situation going on, and the survival of a young boy in this situation. The first chapter is pretty long, so the first couple of pages were very slow and boring to me and I started to regret my choice. But as I read on, the first chapter started to snowball and already became intense in war situations. Reading further, chapters two and three were similar to the end of the first. Very intense and eye-opening. This flipped my views back to my original thought that this book would be a very good read.

  3. I put Night on the top of my list because I enjoy reading about the Holocaust. I felt that I would be very interested in the reading. My initial reaction to the book is that I am very confused, and I have no idea what is going on. The beginning has a slow start from my understanding. I am hoping that with furthering into the book my questions get cleared up and I can enjoy the book.

    2. I also agree that night is a very difficult read. Not only are there many German words, but it is very disturbing. It does pick up eventually. JUst have patience. ;) And I am glad you like reading about the Holocaust. you will definitely enjoy this book! Great blog!!

    3. I agree with it being at the top of my list because of the holocaust. Do you think it is a challenging read? In my opinion I think it is because of all the vocab but hopefully it will get better!

    4. I also found the beginning confusing however I read the introduction passages and I feel they helped me understand more about what is going on.

  4. My reaction to this book is that is very complicated and I will be honest I do not know what is going on. The book has a slow start and I hope that the more I read the book I hope I figure out my questions while enjoying my book. I choose this book because it has to do with holocaust and I think it is very interesting to learn about it.

    2. I chose this book because of the same reasons, because it's interesting and I want to learn from from an actual survivor's experience. The book so far seems gloomy and depressing, do you think that there will be some cheerful/happier parts in the book?

    3. I also chose Night since it had to deal with the Holocaust. Im hoping that all of the confusion clears up so I can enjoy the book.

    4. The Holocaust it also very interesting and that is also why I chose this book. The book does have a slow beginning, but I think the vocab is the hardest part. What's the hardest part for you about the book?

Kite Runner, while this book was not my first choice I think that it will be a good fit as it is similar to my top two choices, with the author sharing a story about growing up in the turbulent middle east. I thought it would be interesting to see how different kids in this area's lives are different from ours and how they make do with what the situation given to them. I am not very far into the book but so far it is a lot of exposition, but seems like an interesting read and I think I will enjoy it.

  6. I chose A Thousand Splendid Suns. It was at the top of my list. The preview of the book was very enticing. It intrigued me because of the descriptive language. It seemed very intense, and a fast paced plot. After reading the beginning of the book, it was very fast paced and extremely intense. So it was just what I thought! It starts of with Mariam breaking her mother's family Heirloom, and her mother calling her a bastard as in a child born in wedlock. It then taalking about how her father Jalil loved her and was very kind to Mariam. He told her stories, and gave her all the love in the world. Then he kicked them out of his house and I assume he divorced her mother. Her mother was extremely bitter towards the whole situation. She talks about nothing but negativity about Jalil, but still Mariam loves him. I am really excited to see where this book takes me.

  7. Some of the things that attracted me to the novel a long way gone even though it wasn't my top pick. Was that I like to read books with action or about wars. And this book is about a war in Africa. My reaction after reading the first few pages in the book is that this book started out when the war wasn't to the authors village yet but refuges where there, but they kept getting closer. So the book doesn't jump right in but it gives a little background information.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I think you are correct. None of the action really started until chapter 2 or 3. A lot of background information is given in the first chapter which is why I think it is such a longer chapter.

      Delete
    2. The beginning of the book is very dull, but it kinda serves its purpose because it gave some background information that explains how the village is. This is going to be a great book.

      Delete
    3. I agree. The first chapter is a lot of background information. The author does a good job in leading up to the war that is soon to come to the village.

  9. This book attracted me in the sense of how openly gruesome it is. This tells me that it can talk about anything. The first couple of pages are just introducing the characters and where they are and who they are to him. BUT I'M NOT A RAPPER.

  10. Well I am reading I am Malala. It was not my first choice but it was my second and I guess the part that attracted me was when we read the random pages in the packet because it was one that sounds like one of the lease violent books. This book seems a little more challenging to follow because she starts to ramble on about random things. It is very slow because she gives a lot of background information that doesn't seem to be very important at the moment

  11. What brought me to wanting to read A Long Way Gone was how intense and graphic it was. The first few pages were a little slow but after them it got intense. Lets just say someone gets blown to bits by an RPG. I think this book is going to be good.

      Delete
    6. I think his writing is so confusing because in the intro he explained the difficulty of getting the right words to express the way he thinks of what happened. So a lot of uncommon words and phrases where kept in the book to help readers better capture what he meant.

  13. Well i chose Thousand Splendid Suns because it seemed like a really good book and it seemed really dirty that's why i wanted to read it because it grabbed my attention. 40. The book I am Malala Seemed to really catch my eye in the small excerpts when we read about the author and the one page out of book. The first few pages went kind of slow but the book is starting to pick up and become more interesting. I hope the book keeps getting more interesting.

    1. I thought the book wasnt as slow as a start compared to my first book. I really like how she explains her background and goes into good detail. I hope it also gets better and stays an easy read.

    2. I agree with Mallory. The background info she gives is very helpful for understanding why she does what she does.

  41. "A long way gone," was my third choice and though it was farther down on my list I found the summary of the book to be fascinating. I wanted to know more about how other countries take kids to fight for them. It seemed like a really interesting story. The first chapter starts off slower like every other book, but then the following chapters start to pick up more about the story.

  42. Well I ended up with A Long Way Gone. I originally wanted to read Night because of my massive interest in world war 2, but A Long Way Gone was my second pick because of the action portrayed in the short reading we did before choosing our books. So far the book seems to be pretty average, just and average exposition, nothing too fast or slow, just a normal beginning to a historical book.

    1. I also wanted to read night for the same reasons. However, my book, a thousand splendid suns, has yet to capture my interest.

  43. I choose A Long way gone because it sounded like a good book about 3rd world problems. The book jumps right into it. Wasn't slow at all. the book is very interesting to read.

  46. I picked the book because of the scene we read about it while we were choosing. Right away it caught my attention. So far the book seems interesting because mariam finds out that her father abandoned her mom after their affair resulting in her pregnancy. She also finds out her father has 3 wives and nine kids. ALso Nana always reminds mariam that her father abandoned them.I think she wants mariam to hate Jalil

  47. i picked kite runner as my second or third choice. it didn't appeal to me like a long way gone did but it seems like an interesting throwback story. I am excited to see all the interesting character and places this story has to offer.

  48. Although The Kite Runner was my third choice of all the books i thought it sounded interesting because it took place in time of war. The book starts off slow while it talks about the background of all the main characters. I am hoping this book gets exciting once it gets to the main plot in the story.

    1. I too had kite runner as my third choice. If I had the choice, I would read Night. Would you continue reading this one if you had the choice?

  49. Thousand splendid suns really caught my attention from the short paragraph that I read, however the book had a slow start. The only thing that really caught my attention is how the father has three wives and nine kids.

  50. I was interested in "A Long Way Gone" from the first day we read about the authors. First off, it is a memoir of the narrator's childhood, told by him. That makes for a very exciting story, and adds a nice personal touch. Next, it takes place in a third world country that isn't very well-known in the grand scheme of the world. The tale of the civil war that takes place in country is a story that is not nearly as well versed as that of the American Civil War or maybe even the conflict in Syria today. War is something that affects everyone, but it is hard to imagine sending children off to war here in the US. Its interesting to learn about something new from a unusual perspective.

  51. It has an interesting start, I would agree. But I think that it is needed to explain to readers a little bit about the war. Since so many people are not familiar with the country and the conflict, it was nice to have a little intro. The action will pick up later, I'm sure.

  52. I picked Night because it involved the history of WWII and the Holocaust. Both subjects I found very interesting to learn about so it was only natural for me to be attracted to a book about someones experience as a Holocaust victim. The books didn't seem to jump right in to the story, but I did not find the intro to be slow. It seems to be a bit in between with giving background info and presenting a minor conflict to keeps things interesting.

  53. I was assigned to read A thousand splendid suns, but this wasn't my first choice. I wanted to read night because it was the only book that wasn't about afghan culture and history which bores me to death. I decided to give it a shot anyway, but so far it hasn't proven me wrong, and it has yet to intrigue me in any way.

  55. I am reading I Am Malala. My sister really likes this book so I am glad I get to read it. The book is a little slow because she gives a lot of background information before she starts the book. I feel like this book will leave an impression on me.
