Blog Response #3

Stotan!, Chinese Handcuffs, Running Loose, and Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes all involve intense topics that add to the plot.  Talk about the point in which you became hooked into your book.  What did Chris Crutcher do to hook you? Describe any moment or moments in the book where you didn't want to put the book down.  What will you always remember about this book?

  1. In Stotan!, Chris Crutcher did a fantastic job at starting a chapter off slowly with some background detail and then intensifies that section with some sort of conflict. Whether it was with Nortie and his conflicts with his father, or stories about his past. If Walker was having troubles with Marty O'Brian, I got hooked because I just wanted to see O'Brian get it handed to him. Towards the end of the book, Chris Crutcher kept feeding you new information, new stories, or connected certain quotes to the reading again so I got hooked into the last 4 or 5 chapters. I will always remember Stotan week, their stories, and the state meet.

    1. Were the chapters slow all the way through them or just at first?

    2. The first couple of chapters were just background information of the characters. So there was no interesting conflicts going on, you just were learning about everyone at that point.

    3. I totally agree that it started off slowly, and then it started getting more intensified. I kept reading the book cause i also wanted to know if O'Brian would get it handed to him. This book always seemed to add more conflict and stories.

    4. I agree that it started off slowly but intensified throughout the plot. I also liked how Chris kept bringing up more issues, it helped keep the story interesting.

    5. Did you think Crutcher was gonna give the plot twist like when Jeff got Blood disease and wasn't able to swim again at state?

  2. I would say the most intense point in Staying Fat for Sarah Brynes was when Sarah went looking for her mom in Reno and Eric got stabbed by Sarah's dad.I think this was the best part where i couldn't put my book down.It was the most exciting part of the book for me because Eric life was on the line and Sarah's dad went nuts. Also another interesting part in the book was when Lemry was telling the story about what happened in Reno when they found Sarah's mom and asked her why she left and told her to come back. I think Chris Crutcher hooked all the readers of this book by the way he wrote it. One minute Eric would be at swim practice and the next he would be walking into the front doors at the hospital going to see Sarah. That is one thing i will always remember about this book, is the way he wrote it.

    2. That's what kept me on my toes as well. Sarah wanting to look for her mom meant that she actually wanted a better life instead of being raised by an abusive father.

  3. In Running loose, the book started off pretty good and kept being interesting to read more. The part of the book that got intense and made me kept read more was when Louie and Becky got back from her summer cabin and Becky died in a car accident. Crutcher hooked me on the book by making the part seem very real and the way he wrote the part of how Louie was freaking out about the whole thing from at Becky's funeral to at school with the tree and plaque that got donated to her. After that part of the book i got really hooked into it with Louie always freaking out and making it all a big deal it was hard for me to put the book down from reading. I will always remember the part at the football game when Boomer tackled Washington the other teams player and threw him up and he landed down on the bench on his back.

  4. In running loose the part that got me hooked is when louie blew up because lendnecky wanted them to play dirty football so they could win There was one more. It was right when louie's mother pulled up to the station to tell him some very important news but then the bell rang. I just wanted to keep reading to find out what the news was. I had an idea but i wanted to know how. I will remember this book because it is one of the few that i was hooked to.

  5. In the book Running Loose I didn't really get hooked in to the book until Becky died. It got me hooked because it was a sudden change from good to a traumatic tragedy that changed the whole course of the book and made what came next unknown. I really just found the book easy to relate to and not very challenging to read. I fell that is why the book was so easy for me. I feel that the parts that kept me not wanting to put the book down was the football game where Boomer took out Washington and when Becky and Louie were at the cabin and when Becky died. I will always remember that no matter how bad thing get you can live in the past and have to face the problems that come up in front of you.

    1. I also found this book really easy to read. I don't know how Chris Crutcher does it, but I think he can write in a particular way that makes some of the most boring topics at least stimulating.

    2. I felt the same way about the football game where boomer took Washington out, that part really pulled me into the book. i also felt the same way about the same about what to take away from the book.

    3. That's where I got into the book more because of the huge change and how Louie would have to react.

    4. After Becky died I thought the story was going to turn for the worst but it came through showing how Louie could cope with his feelings and push through.

  6. In Chinese Handcuffs I really got hooked when Dillon learned of Jen's secret and began to try to help her. One part where I didn't want to put the book down was when Jen tried to commit suicide and Dillon chased her down and stopped her. Another part where I didn't want to put the book down was when Dillon put his plan to catch TB into action. Overall Chris Crutcher did a great job of writing a book that was easy to read and understand while keeping the plot complicated and exciting. This book was a really good read and I am glad that I read it.

    2. I actually forgot about the part where Jen tried to commit suicide. I also couldn't put the book down as soon as she ran out of the gym doors. I was really confused what was going to happen at first. As soon as he said the bridge, I knew what she was trying to do, and my heart was racing until she came back up from over the edge. I still thought she would try it again, so I had to keep reading until they were back at Dillons, and safe. I would also have to agree that it was a very easy, interesting book to read.

  7. I got really hooked on Running Loose when Boomer took out Washington at the football game. It was when everything had gotten serious. All of Louie's hard work towards football was gone, everyone in town now hated him. Louie's life just became worse after this. I will always remember that Becky died in this book. It got spoiled to me and when it did I wanted to actually stop reading the book that's how upset I was about that tragedy.

  8. I enjoyed Running Loose throughout the whole book, although the first few chapters were slow. A time when I could not set the book down was when Becky got into a car accident and died. The way Crutcher wrote how Louie was feeling and all his emotions seemed so real. The story went from Louie's life being pretty darn good to it being turned upside down. When Louie shouted at the funeral and destroyed the plaque that was made in memory of Becky; it showed how hurt he was. In this book I will always remember how Louie stood up for what he believed in no matter what the outcome was.

    1. It seems as if Cructcher uses the extremes a lot. In my book there are character's who have it so bad they all feel sorry for themselves. In Running Loose it goes from good to bad real fast. In Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes it goes from bad to good. In the end does your book have a happy ending?

      Delete
    2. Yes the book did end in a happy ending which was nice and it was kind of a surprise.

    3. Though I didn't read Running Loose, Stotan! can make a connections in some ways. Stotan! started off slow just like your novel. And with multiple books written by the same author it is a relation to his writing techniques.

  9. In Chinese handcuffs the parts that got me hooked was when Jennifer was in the hospital and was holding her secret to her self. Another part I didn't want to put the book down was when Dillon was black mailing T.B. with the tapes. Another part where I didn't want to put the book down was the Epilogue when Dillon got over his frustration with Preston and when T.B. finally gets caught. Overall I think Chris Crutcher did a fantastic job writing Chinese Handcuffs; it was funny, suspenseful, kind of weird is some spots but overall I enjoyed the book.

    1. I also was hooked during the time that Jen was in the hospital, but it started at the game. Chris Crutcher does a great job of just giving you enough information that you have to keep reading just to put all the pieces together. Like while she was in the hospital, she was telling about her grandpa and just when I thought I was going to get the information I was looking for the nurse walked in and interrupted Jens thoughts.

  10. Honestly, the part where I got hooked in the first place was when Louie had dialogue, and therefore revealed his smartass nature. After that, the whole thing with Louie getting kicked out of football got me even more interested. Finally, I ended up spending the next two chapters just processing what had happened in chapter 12. I will always remember that the book ended with Louie implying that he was going to destroy something with a sledgehammer... again.

    1. In my book there is a character that seems everything comes out of his mouth is something that makes him seem like a smartass. Maybe Chris Crutcher had a friend like that when he was a teenager.

    2. I feel like Crutcher had some bad experiences in his life which lead him to writing books about many different things. Did you ever wonder that?

  11. In Chinese handcuffs I was kinda hooked the whole time while reading but what got me completely hooked was at the point when Jen told Dillon what was going on at home and told him not to tell anyone. I was interested in this book the whole time because as soon as Jen was introduced Chris Crutcher was giving hits that something was wrong with her home life, and I wanted to keep reading to figure out what was happening. Once I found out her secret I wanted to keep reading to figure out what Dillon would do. If he would keep her secret or what he would do. From the point that Dillon came up with his plan till the end I did not want to put the book down.

    1. I agree Brittany the whole time I was hooked on was when Jen told Dillon the secret and if Dillon was going to keep the secret that Jen told him or his he going to tell somebody about it and Jen home life got me really hooked with her mom.

    2. Yeah I agree it was very interesting to see how Dillon handled Jen's secret and how he was able to keep his cool while dealing with all of that stress. The end of the book was very exciting, but I think it was almost kind of boring how conveniently his plan worked out in the end, like how there was that shelf in the perfect place, with a curtain in front of, and it looked like no one had used it in a long time. These conveniences make Chris Crutcher look kind of lazy in the way he ended to book.

      Delete
    3. I would agree that the whole book was interesting, but I would say that there were just a lot of points that it was hard to keep reading because it was just so slow. I did really enjoy the tension in the book, with Jen and her secret, but that's all it had going for me.

  12. In the book Chinese Handcuffs, Chris Crutcher did an amazing job with trying to keep his readers interested. In every chapter it would start out with just details or a journal entry that would always be enganging; but what got me really hooked was when it started talking about Jennifer's creepy situations with her biological/step-dad, and their excuses to prove to her that they weren't that creepy when everybody else around them knew it was. What I will always remember from this book is the life lessons it teaches all the readers.

    1. I wonder if Cutcher had issues with his father, because my book features a character who had been burned intentionally by her own father.

    2. I am starting to believe he did because in my book, Stotan, a character is beat by his father just about everyday.

      Delete
    3. I agree that Chris Crutcher did a great job of keeping me interesting through out the book and I think that his fixation with bad father figures could have also stemmed from his experience as a therapist specializing in child abuse and neglect.

  13. Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes started off very slowly. I didn't start to enjoy the book until Someone brought up the fact that the burns on Sarah's were not an accident. Her dad burned her intentionally. When that was said, I wanted to find out who her dad was and what they were going to do about it. I couldn't stop reading. When they uncovered more and more about how Sarah was burned and I was very intrigued. Cutcher did an excellent job of pulling me and not letting go. I will always remember that no matter how long ago you committed a crime, it will always come back to haunt you.

  15. I didn't want to put the book down when the fight between Virgil and Eric went down. Many things kept me on my toes, for the fact that Virgil was that crazy to actually cut someone and how Eric reacted. Eric tried to run away at one point, but it didn't work. Then he made his way to Dale's house to where he passed out. I honestly thought that he was going to die at that point when he passed out. That was the only part that actually had me wide awake and on my toes paying attention to what was going on throughout the book. When Virgil was sentenced to twenty years in prison, I was very happy about that. Now, neither Sarah or Eric would get hurt again.

  16. This blog response questions in my opinion are a bad ones. They suggests that everyone had a moment where they got hooked and a moment when they couldn't put the book down. I know that that is not true, because I never had any of those moments. I found my book, Running Loose, interesting but at a point where it was only a little better than watching paint dry. Don't get me wrong though it is a good book it is just that the story had no major moments that piqued my personal interests. As such I only ever read the book when I felt it necessary. Which brings me to the last question of this blog response, "What will you always remember about this book?". I will probably hardly remember anything about this book directly. Some of its messages and lessons might stick around in my subconscious, but I probably won't be able to recall where they came from.

    3. I agree and disagree. There were parts that made me want to read more, but overall nothing is going to stick out to me forever. If someone asked me what the best scene from a book was, nothing in Running Loose would make the cut. But if I were to think about just this book specifically, then I could pick out a couple things. Maybe the ending with the plaque, or maybe the big hit at the game, for example. Overall good book with a few decent points.

  17. I liked the part when Becky died because that just added a huge twist on the whole book. I was never really hooked because I'm not a big reader, although there were some times when points stuck out and were good. like when Louie stuck up for himself against the coach and principal. I didn't want to put the book down when I got lose to the end because I knew that I could finish it and I liked the part when Louie broke the plaque that was put out "in honor of" Becky but had the principals signature on it. i will always remember that if you have people around you that care that you can do almost anything.

I never really wanted to put this book down because it was very easy to relate to, but also because it was said through the eyes of kids in high school. The part where I really got hooked was when Nortie got into a fight with his dad and ended up moving out. Nortie has always had problems with his family and it has mostly been his entire life and him telling us about it got me hooked on reading more. I believe that the book could've been at least fifty pages shorter if he would've left out all of the useless information. However the end of the book was nothing like that. The end of the book was straight to the point, and I believe he did that to make it have a more exciting pace. When I was finishing the book I was hooked on knowing what happens next, I even kept reading when I went to physics second period. The majority of the book was slow and drawn out, and I'm not sure if the one exciting end was worth the read, but I think that it probably isn't the most boring book I could've read for class.

  24. Stotan was a decent book through and through. Chris Crutcher did a good job of keeping you interested in what you were reading throughout the book but his style of writing just is not for me. He left you hanging at the end of the book on so many important things, the book just kind of.. Ends. That part alone made me a little angry but other than that I guess it was a solid book. Chris really made you feel something for every character, good and bad. The part that got me the most hooked was basically every part with Nortie in it, there was so much conflict in his life that every part he was in was exciting. Stotan was a good book overall, but I really don't see myself reading it a second time.

  25. In Stotan! the beginning was slow but picked up quickly after the first couple of chapter. As I am not a swimmer the book was easy to relate to because it was told through the eyes of high schoolers. I became hooked on the book the moment we first learned about Nortie's family. I knew that this would continue to develop through out the story. I was not able to put the book down after learning that most of the swimmers came from unsettling backgrounds. The imagery that Chris Crutcher used made the book more enjoyable and harder to put down. I will always remember this book by the characters and how they were developed through out the plot line.

When Nortie was introduced his background story kept the wheels turning, wondering of what was going to happen next or will he get taken away from his family.

    2. I also agree that the start of the book was really slow, and also I could only relate to the parts were they talked about high school. Do you think if Norites background was different you wouldn'd have liked it as much? His background kind of brought the whole story together.

  26. In the book Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes, I didn't exactly get "hooked". For me it was a great read. but it was also a dry read. Yes I admit that there are some funny comments and great advise, but I wished the book had more suspense and more for me to grasp onto while reading the story. And that's just what it was. It was a story, there wasn't much for me to interoperate, so guess if you may. Although chapter 16 until the end was extremely quick and suspenseful, and just what I was hoping for in the book. If I were to say a point I got hooked on the book it was definitely the last 4 chapters. but 4 out of 19, is kind of a late point to get hooked. In these chapter's you find out about Jodie's abortion and you official get to see how Sarah's dad reacts. Not to mention he stalked, trespassed, highjacked Eric's car, chased him around town, and stabbed him in the elbow. it was all really intense, and It felt as if it ended almost abruptly. Even though I wasn't very into this book, I will always remember some of the life lessons, The main one consisting on alongs the lines of "you can't control what other people think, but you can change how you react. This is an okay read. I suggest you give it a try.

  29. Chris Crutcher did a very good job of narrating a story from the first-person perspective of a teenage boy. Louie's storytelling style was very humorous at points, and also very realistic at others. From being immature at one point, to facing death later on, Louie has seen everything, and always has a very matter-of-fact view on life. He learns as he goes and becomes a better person along the way. I couldn't the book down at many parts. Things like his conflict with Boomer after the game, or the occasions when he is found sitting in the office negotiating with Coach and Mr. Jasper. Without the development of Louie, this novel would not have been nearly as entertaining. I think the lesson I will take away from this book overall is to keep going and keep moving forward.

  30. I got hooked on the book when Mark Briton tried committing suicide. After that there was many times where Virgil Byrnes kept me on my toes. When Eric looked in the rear view mirror and saw Virgil, I couldn't put the book down from there.

  31. in running loose the part that hooked me the most was when becky died. there was a lot of drama after she died. louie and many outbursts. i felt like people understood why he did what he did. i think that coach madison understood the most because he went thru the same thing

    1. Louie was written as a very rash and impulsive character and Chris certainly stayed true to that throughout the story.

    3. to me, Becky's death was a real kick in the teeth since we were getting to know her and hear from her more and more then she was just gone. i think we all felt what Louie was feeling at that point in the book

  32. I got hooked on Running Loose right off the bat! I enjoyed how it started off with the football side of things and football is enjoyable to read about so I always wanted to read more about the football. Once the football part ended I was disappointed but more events kept coming up that kept me reading which is hard to do because I'm not a big reader. When Louie was running against Washington in the final race I don't think I have read faster in my life because he described this part of book very well. I will always remember how Louie was never afraid to stand up for what he believes in because that can be a challenging thing to do.

  33. I enjoyed the book stotan but only to a certain extent. There were many moments in the book in which I wanted to continue reading but i believe the book lacks a major plot. Many exciting moments, needs a main point.

  34. In running loose i was hooked from the point were Boomer take the hit on Washington. The reason behind this ti starts a snow ball effect in his life and makes everything fall into place. When Becky dies I couldn't stop because he literally made it action packed and it never was quite what I expected to happen. But I will never forget the reactions and how Louie evolved from shy to cocky.

  35. In this book, Stotan, I really got hooked to the book around Chapter 6. I feel like the book had no plot to it, but still made you on the edge of your seat wondering what would happen next. Chris Crutcher did a great job writing the book, and the character were great too. Having a team of only 4, those four fought all the way, even knowing they would probably lose. It was cool reading, and seeing. Stotan was a great read, and can't wait for the other two.

  36. I probably started to get hooked or really into the story of Stotan! during chapter 8. Crutcher finally made something happen in the book in chapter 8 with Nortie and the boys that hooked me. There really wasn't a spot in the book where I couldn't put it down. If I would have to choose one it would be where Nortie moved out from his crazy family. Ill remember from the book Stotan! that the unbreakable bond that four boys had, and the dedication they put in to a sport for their last year of swimming.

  37. I became hooked when christopher crutcher decided to brutally and horrifically kill off his nice lookin girlfriend, Becky. The way that he makes you feel like you know Becky, really got me because when she dies, it feels like your best friend died. he is very good at characterization. For me, i didnt want to put the book down after chapter 12. I will always remember that i enjoyed the book and louies sense of humor.

  38. Christopher Crutcher started off a chapter toward the end of the novel kind of slow but as the chapter went on big events were happening and were totally unexpected. A part in Stotan! that got me to the point where I didn't want to put down the book is when Nortie and his group of friends showed true passion for one of their friends. They were to the point where they suggested giving up swimming to be with him. This novel has left me with life lessons that I will keep in mind for life. Everyone has a background story and though it may be magical the life everyone has dreamed of or constantly hiding in fear. Everyone should be treated with respect and anyone is capable of achieving anything they set their mind too.

    1. It was a very touching story, and I felt every emotion that the characters were feeling as I read it. Like when Jeff was dying and they swam in the relay as a three person group without him with the chance of them being disqualified.

  39. In Running Loose, what got me hooked to the book is when the coach wanted to off an all-star athlete on the other team. It had me hooked, every time i wanted to keep reading I had to force myself to stop and do the reading log. It was just a super intense sequence of events.

  40. WELL, Chris Crutcher did an amazing job with this book. A moment that stuck with me is when the team was suppose to take Washington out of the game. Which is targeting which is illegal in football. What Louie did after that was quit the team, i completely agree with is actions. and honestly i would have done the same that's why this moment stuck with me. Play clean football.

After that I didn't want to put the book down and I was curious to see what Louie was going to do next. 43. In the book Stotan! Chris Crutcher started the book of very slow and not as interesting because it was just all out the characters and how they are involved on the swim team. Once she reveals background about Nortie is when I didn't want to stop reading, I wanted to know more and what happen after that. But when it started to talk about Stotan! week i didn't really care to read the book any more. Also another part in the book was when Nortie didn't want to work with the kids anymore because of what he did, at this part it gave out even more background information and then I was hooked again. The part I will always remember is the part where Nortie got beat by his dad in front of Walker.

  44. I read the book Stotan and was really interested in the book when Jeff got cancer. This is a very unexpected event that happened towards the end of the book. One thing i took away from the book was that no matter the obstacles you have in your life, you can always push past them.

  47. I read Running Loose and there were a few very interesting parts of the book. I thought the part right when becky dies was so intersting. i didnt know what louie was going to do about it or handle it. i was waiting for a giant scene to happen and it happened at the funeral. the cabin part also kept me hooked because i was waiting for Louie to pull a move but he let me down and made the book boring. I will always remember how well he played of hitting the plaque with the hammer. he didnt let people know even though it was clearly him.

  48. in running loose, the real attention grabber for me was Becky's death. After that the whole sense of the book changed and so did Louie. it seemed like he got on more trouble running his mouth than he did in previous chapters but in a way it felt like he had a good reason to.

  49. A part in Running Loose that kept me interested was when Coach Lednecky said that he wanted someone to take out Washington on Salmon River's team. From there on, the book always had something going on. I didn't want to stop reading because I was wondering what would happen next. One thing I will remember is the accident that happened with Becky. It was a huge turning point in the story.

  50. WELL, What kept me in this book was the fact that Becky died. Her death caused a big impact on Louie's life, and the fact that he did some crazy things after she died kept me going in the book. Then joining track and field kept me interested because i can relate to it. BUT he was a ANIMAL and destroyed the competition.

  51. The book Stotan always talks about being strong and showing no pain. This is very important through the story as the four main characters all are going through a tough year for them. One has always been beaten, the second is stuck with what to do when feelings change, the third is always pushing everyone to do better, and the last one is dying. For the last 60 pages, I could not put my book down. I was enjoying every detail, and the ending seemed as if it came 30 pages early.

  52. I really didn't get hooked, but it was a really good read the humor kept it from being dry. There were many interesting parts to the book though. for example when you find out that Sarah's burns weren't an accident, Mark Brittain tries to kill himself. Id have to say that from chapter 14 to the end is where it gets exciting. I will never forget the ending because every thing works out right in the end.

  54. In the book Running Loose i would have to say I got hooked when Brenda drove over to the station to give Louie the bad news. I feel like i got hooked at this point because Crutcher did a very good job of making it seem so real. At this point I knew i was caught because i never wanted to stop reading because i was curious to see how louie was going to retaliate to that. I was also curious to see what he was gonna do with out Becky by his side.

  55. In the book Stotan what got me hooked in the book at first was when Nortie hit the kid. What really got me more hooked was that the more I kept reading the more unraveled about the Nortie background which made it a lot more interesting and I could not put the book down. The one thing I will remember about this book is the bound these people had and what they all went through.
